Licensing Steps

Join the growing CityStudio movement! The CityStudio license includes everything you need to set up, build, launch and operate your CityStudio, including brand assets and guidelines, starter documents, templates and coaching, as well as an evaluation framework and membership in the CityStudio Network.

There are 6 steps in the licensing process:

STEP 1: Learn about the model

CityStudio is a comprehensive partnership framework between cities and their local post secondary schools for increased  innovation, engagement and experimentation.

  1. Review our Launch a CityStudio page (if you haven’t already).
  2. Read our reports to learn more about the impact you can create with CityStudio.
  3. Browse our General FAQs to learn about the model and our process.
  4. Take a look at our Readiness Checklist for Cities to understand what’s needed to launch.
  5. Read our Licensing FAQs for quick answers to common questions.
Before you proceed

Step 2 can begin when municipal and academic leaders indicate an shared interest in collaborating on a CityStudio partnership. We’ll ask for a co-signed high level letter of intention to proceed to the next step.

STEP 2: Confirm the model is right for your city

Bring your questions to the team. We’ll take you through the model in more detail to ensure it’s a good fit for your city and help you set up a strong foundation for moving through the licensing process. This step includes:

  • Call(s) with our team to answer questions, discuss needs and identify fit.
  • Helpful information for setting up a foundation and getting partners on-board.
Before you proceed

At this point we require an MOU between the city and one or more academic partners outlining funding commitments, governance and timelines towards launch. We can provide the template for this.

STEP 3: You’re ready for a license

Congratulations! You are ready to take the next step toward building a CityStudio in your city.

At this time we will provide you with:

  • The tools needed to begin setting up your CityStudio and secure an MOU between municipal and academic partners;
  • CityStudio brand assets (logo) and access to our learning portal;
  • 4 days of consulting hours with the Vancouver team;
  • Membership to the CityStudio Network; and,
  • The licensing agreement for review and completion.

Payment of the licensing fee will also begin in accordance with the schedule provided.

Before you proceed

We will help put in place your governance structure, including an operating budget that includes your first hire, as well as an on boarding and training timeline. Step 4 can begin when the city and academic partner(s) have completed their partnership MOU and return a signed license agreement.

STEP 4: Let’s build your CityStudio

As a licensed CityStudio, you’re now a member of the network. You can now access the portal for documents and templates, as well as contact other cities. Our team will continue to support you through the process of hiring staff and project development.

Before you proceed

Step 5 can begin when you have set your launch date and hired your project coordinator. Coordinator training also needs to be completed before before proceeding to Step 5.

STEP 5: The Annual Cycle

Operation of a CityStudio revolves around an annual cycle that begins with project development and ends with the HUBBUB project showcase and evaluation.

Before you proceed

Cities must meet key milestones in the annual cycle, including sharing project summaries and evaluation, as well as metric and best practices. The format and reporting requirements is provided.

STEP 6: Grow + Maintain

We are here to support you as your CityStudio grows, providing you with any additional help in governance, partnerships, systems and process development, and troubleshooting. You will also be in regular communication with all cities in the CityStudio Network.
